Calluses develop in response to focal areas of stress. As bipedal creatures, our feet see a lot of stress daily as we vary our activity level. The key to the prevention of callous formation involves addressing the source of stress, which may include orthotic intervention or other appropriate offloading devices.
To treat the initial callus once it has formed, we recommend trimming it daily with a Pumice stone or a callous reducing file, such as Dr. Scholls. Afterward, apply oil or moisturizing lotion to the affected area to keep the skin soft. Also, you may soak your feet in liquid fabric softener up to 3 times per week. This consistent home protocol, combined with methods of prevention, will gradually reduce the appearance of the callous over time.
